You Don’t Have to Face This Alone

Cancer is shit! It threatens your life, changes your body, mind and soul
I get it. I've had cancer twice so I know how tough life can feel, your whole world goes upside down when you are given the C word. Life is full of medical appointments and everything cancer related, you don’t know which way to turn and feel like you are just going along with everything in a complete fog.

You finish active treatment and friends and family are ‘woohoo’ but for you it feels different, it doesn’t end there and the threat of the big C is always with you and you don’t feel like celebrating. For you life has changed but no one else gets it except other cancer patients.
This journey can be so overwhelming and that’s okay, here at Counselling for Cancer you find a safe place to talk, cry, laugh or just breathe. This is a place for you. A place to share your fears, your frustrations, your wins - big or small. I am here to help you make sense of it all, and to support you in finding the words to talk to your loved ones too. However you are feeling right now, you are not alone anymore.

My Cancer Story

In September 2018 I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I will never forget that day as I sat opposite the specialist, my world crumbled with each word he said. But after having my operation and getting pathology results, it was good news, no further treatment required.

Roll on to 2023, this was my 5th year and I was looking forward to being “officially” in remission. I was fit and loved my gardening business, I had very little stress and life was good.

On May 23 a lump appeared, at first I wasn’t concerned but eventually thought maybe I will talk with my specialist. After lots of scans, on September 23 (exactly 5 years since the first time) I got the news that I was expecting but dreading, the big C was back, in my lymph nodes and it had spread. I was so shocked I felt numb and just went through the motions of having my reconstruction removed, 5 months of chemotherapy and then 3 weeks of radiotherapy.
It was a hard road - physically, emotionally and spiritually, I had days when I didn’t want to be around anymore, that I couldn’t do it but somehow I found some strength to keep going. I hated having no hair and seeing myself in the mirror.

After active treatment I felt lost, it really hit me hard, I was struggling to process what had happened as well as cope with side effects. I did have counselling which helped a little but it wasn’t quite enough, I needed someone who knew what it was like to live with uncertainty, fear, fatigue and hope - sometimes all in the same day.

After talking with friends and reflecting on what I’d been through, I started moving toward embodying the kind of support I had needed myself — someone real, honest, and grounded in experience.

That’s when I realised: maybe I could be that person for someone else.
